Translating Research To Innovations: ASTN – Q Recap.

Today the ASTN Queensland node hosted a research industry half day conference titled Research and Innovation in Sports Technology (  at the QSAC stadium in Brisbane. The event was kicked off by sports science guru Prof. Allan Hahn (OAM) who provided a wealth of wisdom with a great overview of the evolution of sports technology. Prof.David Lloyd followed  with a great keynote focused on how he, and his musculoskeletal research team,  translate their research from laboratory to the field .

Craig Hill, the executive director of the ASTN, spoke about the current sports tech landscape here in Australia, the wider aims of the ASTN and how they are trying to bolster and further Australia’s position as a forerunner of sports technology. He also introduced the audience to the concept of lean Launchpad, which provides a framework that could be very useful for both researchers and industry in turning research into a minimum viable product – further details can be found here!. Paul Russell from the Queensland Government then talked about the Government’s strong backing of scientific innovation, and detailed the grants and opportunity that would be available to both academia and industry. If you want more information, jump on the website here.  It was great to hear Paul talk and terrific from our perspective to have a government that is firmly supportive of the ASTN mission and on board with the sports technology and innovation agenda.

The event also encompassed an academic side and we had 15 papers that were accepted for presentation. The proceedings of the conference were kindly published by the Journal of Sports Fitness Research and are available online from the link here. I would recommend a read here as all the authors have done a terrific job and the range of topics presented here is vast.  On behalf of the technical committee we would like to extend our gratitude to the reviewers and the Journal of Fitness Research for such a quick and seamless turnaround from submission to publication. Over lunch, the attendees interacted with these publications through a poster session. With many great conversations sparking from this research, testament to the quality of the publications by the authors.


Finally, congratulations to Industrial Design student Rex Whiticker for his paper titled ‘Active Hydrodynamic Drag Devices’ which took out the best paper prize for the event. The cash prize and the glass award were very generously donated by Dr Jim Lee and his website, Jim’s Sports Lab . The website and blog is definitely worthwhile checking out. My personal favourite sections of the page include the Batak challenge and Jim’s long and the shorts of it photo section.

So that’s a wrap for this years ASTN-Q’s Research & Innovation in Sports Technology Event.
